Answer four questions to see whether your nonprofit files the 990-N e-Postcard, Form 990-EZ, the full Form 990 or Form 990-PF, plus your due date. Based on current IRS thresholds; not legal or tax advice.
Gross receipts means total money received from all sources before expenses. “Normally” uses the average of the years you enter (leave earlier years at 0 if the organization is newer).
How it works
| Form | Who generally files it |
|---|---|
| 990-N (e-Postcard) | Gross receipts normally $50,000 or less |
| 990-EZ | Gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000 |
| 990 | Gross receipts $200,000 or more, or total assets $500,000 or more |
| 990-PF | All private foundations |
| None | Churches and certain church-related organizations, among other exceptions |
Returns are due on the 15th day of the 5th month after the fiscal year ends, for example May 15 for a December year end. Forms 990, 990-EZ and 990-PF can be extended 6 months with Form 8868. Read the full guide: which Form 990 should your nonprofit file.
